NYC Reflections
New York City. AKA The Big Apple, AKA The City That Never Sleeps, AKA The City of Dreams. That last nickname was especially relevant on my trip up to NYC with the Design Fellows Program. I never saw myself living in New York after school. I always told myself it was too crowded and too similar to the rest of the East Coast cities I've grown up visiting. However, this trip changed my opinion on the city and showed me a side I'd never seen before. I've highlighted two of my favorite company visits below!

Our first company visit was with Casper, a startup mattress store that is trying to change the way we buy mattresses. Instead of going to one of those mattress stores with pushy salespeople and huge sales every memorial day, Casper is a clean experience that's mostly online. Since I've never bought a mattress, the business model for selling them was something I'd never thought about before. We discussed their A/B testing on their website, their marketing promotions, and how people make decisions in their daily lives.
I admired Caspers brand management, which was incredibly consistent across all their platforms. From their packaging to their social media they do an incredible job. Casper uses illustrations and cooler colors to portray themselves as a friendly, safe, sleep inducing company that puts their customers at the forefront of every decision. When I do finally purchase a mattress, Casper will be my first option.

The other visit that sticks out in my mind was BBDO. I'm a bit of a football junkie, so as soon as I found out they create some of the Super Bowl commercials every year I was hooked. Despite of their size, BBDO allows their employees to be as creative as possible when working with clients. This shows in their work, and in the culture there. Everyone seemed to enjoy working there, and were very proud of what they'd created.

Agency life wasn't something I was very interested in before 2018, however I've realized I'd be open to opportunities in both corporate marketing and working at an agency. I like the dynamic environment of an agency. Constantly having new clients coming in and out of the door is exciting to me, and allows people to flex their creative muscles.
